Day 3 of the “Dance Experiment” went much easier than the previous two. Probably because the dance moves I chose to work on didn’t require much tweaking. All I had to do for the Jazz version of the glissade was not jump it, really. And the grapevine I could keep entirely the same, but for executing it with my heels on the ground instead of being up on my toes. This may all sound very wimpy, but the point of this whole exercise is to find ways I can dance that are completely and utterly safe for my Achilles tendons. Hopefully, I can dance this way even in the midst of an injury. Well, actually I am in the midst of an injury, but at this point it is much recovered. I figure it is best to start from a very basic, safe point. Then it will be easier to build upon that and tailor it to your own uniqueness.
I continued working on the chair dance to Selena Gomez’s song, “Rock God.” I also began, very briefly, a dance to Michelle Branch’s “Til I Get Over You.” I always loved that song. Often, when I hear music, I see dances in my head. It can be a very visual experience for me.
My other side project, which I have yet to mention, has been to set my songs to music and upload them onto YouTube when they’re completed. Sometimes, I do some songwriting and though I can hear instrumentation in my head, I can’t play an instrument to save my life. However, I am extremely fortunate to have friends who are so talented and who are willing to help me out.
I wonder, at times, about my sanity in posting these videos of my dance experiment and, eventually, my music, exposing myself to possible mockery and ridicule. But then, upon further reflection, I admit that my sanity is so, so and stand by my decision to share what I am doing with anyone who might take an interest. I’m helping myself first and if, in turn, I end up helping someone else, that’s all I can ask for.
